Japanese mules: Conquering the West

The mules made by the Japanese company Mizutori, based in Shizuoka, 170 km from Tokyo, represent a contemporary evolution of traditional geta, the iconic Japanese footwear. Its models made from Hinoki wood (Japanese cypress) are especially valued for combining classic craftsmanship with modern ergonomics.

The wooden soles are appreciated for their relaxing aroma, natural resistance to moisture and light weight.

The wood is treated with special presses to create a curved surface that adapts to the arch of the foot, eliminating the common fatigue associated with flat wooden footwear.

The material is compressed to increase its flexibility and strength, allowing the ergonomic sole to better follow the natural movement of the foot while walking. Beneath the wooden sole, a sheet of non-slip EVA or rubber is attached.

The design features a stylized outsole silhouette with a square toe-end and heel, while the upper covering the front part of the foot shows ventilation holes and a distinctive way of closing the upper at the toe-end.

Among the benefits, it has been documented that the sole stimulates pressure points on the sole of the foot, promoting blood flow, while the structure of the footwear encourages a more natural spinal alignment and helps strengthen the muscles of the legs and core.
