Llama and alpaca leather tannery inaugurated
In response to the growing demand for camelid hides, the national government has supported the creation of a new tannery in Turco, Oruro Department. The industrial plant also includes slaughterhouse areas, where meat, bone meal, and fibers are processed. The facility will tan 150 hides per day and produce 45,000 leather pieces.
The inauguration event featured a gastronomic fair showcasing a variety of regional dishes based on camelid meat. Turco is known as the Camelid Livestock Capital of Bolivia. According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), as of 2022, the country had 2,622,416 llamas and a total of 442,183 alpacas. In the 2024 declaration, the government decided to promote and support camelid production.
