At the beginning of August, the Argentine Confederation of Medium Enterprises -CAME-, released the figures for general consumption in July 2020 based on quantities sold in the commercial circuit of the entire country. The result was an average decrease of 27.7% for all items compared with July 2019.
The FOOTWEAR and LEATHER GOODS sector showed an average drop of 44.9%, only surpassed by the jewelery, watches and bijouterie category with 48.7%.
The striking thing was that according to the areas of the country was the drop. In the metropolitan area of Buenos Aires -AMBA- the decrease in the sales of FOOTWEAR and LEATHER GOODS was 67%, thus being the largest drop among all other items. Meanwhile, in the rest of the country it was 21.4%.
The explanation was the greater restrictions on circulation and commercial activity imposed in the area of Buenos Aires and its surroundings, with respect to the interior of the national territory, according to the status and epidemiological evolution of each region.
The FOOTWEAR and manufacturing sector in general has been one of the most affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, given that its consumption was relegated by priority items, such as food, health products, medicines, etc.
Another reason was the very characteristic of the sale of footwear, which in the case of face-to-face purchase, requires greater consumer contact with the product, which increases the risk of infection.
This situation has caused serious disruption to the points of sale, due to lack of liquidity, which seriously compromises the continuity of many businesses, of which it is estimated that there is a high percentage that have already closed their doors permanently.
