UTICRA warns of closures and job losses
The Union of Footwear Industry Workers (UTICRA) reported that the sector is going through a decline in jobs and a process of plant closures, in one of the most critical periods for the industry.
The union’s deputy secretary, Horacio Jerez, stated that major brands are ceasing manufacturing in the country, while the effects of the austerity measures on purchasing power are deepening, according to a union media.
He also warned that the National Government is promoting an economic approach that prioritizes the financial sector over production, while criticizing attempts to introduce a labor flexibilization scheme which, according to UTICRA, would lead to jobs with incomes below the poverty threshold.
