On May 7, leaders of the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries -ABICALCADOS- were received in Brasilia by President Jair Bolsonaro and the President of the Supreme Federal Court, Minister Dias Toffoli.

The association's executive president, Haroldo Ferreira, was part of the INDUSTRY COALITION, which brings together associations from fifteen industrial sectors that employ more than 30 million Brazilians, who together represent 45% of the industry's Gross Domestic Product, represent 65% of manufacturing exports, and contribute with the payment of R $ 250 billion in taxes.

Pandemic and flexibilization

On the agenda were discuss the current situation of the industrial sectors and the economic and social impacts caused by pandemic of the new coronavirus. Isolation flexibility was analyzed for a gradual return to manufacturing and commercial activity with security, among other issues.

Losses and projections

In his presentation, the representative of the shoe manufacturers stressed that the sector has already lost 28,400 jobs since the start of the health crisis and that the trend is for the situation to worsen, in the event that trade remains closed, since 90% of the footwear industry sales come from the domestic market.

“The growth forecast for the industry was 2.5% at the beginning of the year, and now we project a drop of 30%. Without open physical trading, there are no orders. Thus the picture is much more serious", he said, highlighting that ABICALÇADOS defends the safe and gradual return of activities.

Suggestion from the Minister

The same presentation was made to the SFC president, minister Dias Toffoli, about which the shoemaker leader pointed out: “the objective was to show the effects of the closure of trade for the industrial sector. Both the president and his minister showed concern with the situation, while the second suggested the creation of a committee made up of companies and workers to discuss the issue", said Haroldo Ferreira.
