On March 7th, members of ABICALÇADOS held a meeting with representatives of the Chamber of the Footwear Industry of Argentina (CIC-Bs.As.) to evaluate the trade in the sector between both countries.
Considering the possibility of a massive influx of Chinese footwear, the meeting focused on the continuity of the Mercosur Common External Tariff (CET). "The purpose of the CET, currently set at 35% for imported shoes from countries outside Mercosur, would pave the way for a Chinese invasion of Brazilian and Argentine shelves", stated Haroldo Ferreira, executive president of the Brazilian footwear entity.
Other topics discussed included sustainability in the industry, normalization of import payments in Argentina, and a common currency within the bloc, as reported by ABICALÇADOS.
