Consequences on production and employment

Footwear manufacturing in Brazil suffered a retraction of more than 30% in the first nine months of 2020.
Also from ABICALÇADOS they reported negative figures in the sector, in relation to production and employment, as a result of the impact of the pandemic.

As detailed in the “Scenario Analysis” event, in the first nine months of this year, there was a 30.9% retraction in footwear manufacturing, compared to the same months of 2019. The estimate for the entire year, is that the industry contracts 25%, taking into account a rebound in the final months of 2020, according to Priscila Linck -Markets Intelligence Coordinator of the association-. She added that there were 208 million fewer pairs that were stopped producing, as a result of the contraction registered to September.

On the other hand, Linck pointed out that there are 243 thousand jobs between January-September, this is 25,800 fewer jobs, a contraction of 14% compared to the previous year. However, around 19 thousand jobs were created in the third quarter of 2020. Similarly, the footwear sector went from around 30% of production capacity in June, to 62% in the ninth month of the year.
