The report from ABICALÇADOS -Brazilian Footwear Industries Association- details the overall exports made in the first 5 months of the year, which confirmed a decrease compared to the same period in 2022.
Total Brazilian footwear exports from January to May 2023 showed a 10.8% decline in volume, with stable revenue. The figures correspond to 57.3 million pairs exported, valued at US$ 538 million.
As the main buyer, Argentina imported 6.6 million pairs worth US$ 106.6 million, representing a 3.6% decrease in volume and a 43% increase in revenue compared to the same period in 2022.
The United States followed with 4.5 million pairs imported, totaling US$ 92 million. These numbers reflected a 54.7% decrease in quantity and a 37% decrease in revenue.
French buyers also purchased 60% fewer Brazilian shoes in volume, with a 12.5% lower value, compared to the first 5 months of 2022.
According to Haroldo Ferreira, the president of ABICALÇADOS, this downward trend in Brazilian footwear exports is due to several factors: the devaluation of the dollar, which increases the cost of Brazilian products; the global economic slowdown, and the increase in Chinese exports, which have risen by over 20% in the last 2 months.
