According to data published by EUROSTAT, the European statistical data office, and the sectorial entities of the countries, in the total balance of the first semester of 2020 -January / June- Europe exported 791 million pairs of footwear by value of 17,900 million euros. This meant a decrease of 18% compared to the same period in 2019.
Obviously, the negative performance is due to the consequences generated by the Covid-19 health crisis at a global level.
Among the three largest footwear producers in Europe: Italy, Spain and Portugal, the most affected country was Italy, with exports of 79 million pairs worth 3.8 billion euros. These figures represented a decrease of 25% compared to 2019, which meant a loss of 1,300 million euros.
For Spain, the drop was also relevant. In the semester, 68 million pairs were exported for 1,129 million euros, 24% less than in the same period of 2019.
Regarding Portugal, with 29 million pairs exported amounting to 673 million euros, the decline was 21%.
