Deforestation Regulation could complicate tanneries

In the last stretch of 2024, the European Union's Anti-Deforestation Regulation is set to come into effect, potentially impacting the leather chain. One more factor that would add to the difficult situation it currently faces on an economic level.

This was stated by unions and UNIC -which brings together Italian tanneries- who indicated the low feasibility of the required traceability tools to ensure that bovine hides sold in the EU do not originate from deforested areas.

According to a document published by these entities, the regulation could "(...) depopulate the economic and social fabric of the sector." In addition, they clarified that the sector has been addressing deforestation and traceability issues for years.
