ASSOCALZATURIFICI reported that domestic consumption decreased by 3.1% in volume and 1.3% in value between January and September 2023 compared to the same period the previous year. Compared to pre-pandemic figures (2019), the results were approximately 5% lower.
Furthermore, data from the Confindustria Moda Research Center revealed that exports showed an 8.7% contraction in pairs, contrary to business growth of 3.2%, compared to the same nine months of 2022. Within the European Union, there was a 6.1% decrease in quantity but an 8.5% increase in value, while markets outside the bloc decreased by 13.4% and 1.2% respectively.
Some factors contributing to this performance were higher costs, conflicts in Ukraine-Russia and the Middle East, and a weakened economy in some parts of the world, according to the president of the association, Giovanna Ceolini.
