Mexican footwear industry responds to Trump's plans

At the end of last November, Mauricio Battaglia Velázquez -president of CICEG-, expressed his concerns regarding the announcement by Donald Trump, who has held the U.S. presidency since January 20. Trump decided to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico if efforts to curb fentanyl trafficking and migration to the U.S. were not met.

To prevent the measure from affecting the sector, they were working with CONCAMIN, which brings together industrialists from the country; and the U.S. Footwear Association, in an effort to secure agreements that would block the tariff implementation. If unsuccessful, the goal was to exclude footwear from the initiative.

Battaglia described the proposal as dangerous and warned of its potential negative consequences for both Mexico and the U.S., due to the inflationary effects it could generate in the neighboring country. The latest reports indicate that Trump and Mexico have agreed on a 30-day truce to negotiate the enforcement of these measures.
