Mexican footwear manufacturers warn of rising supplies prices

They object that they make it difficult their recover in a very reduce consumer market.

Difficult dilemma: to shift the increases in the price of materials, in the face of depressed demand.

Different footwear industrialists and entrepreneurs from León, Guanajuato, the main footwear region of the country, commented by different means, the continuous increases registered in the prices of materials, components and accessories used in manufacturing. This includes hides and skins, and raw materials, whether of domestic or imported origin.

According to shoemakers, the increases applied to their footwear are around 5% on average, compared to the same period last year. However, from suppliers they have received uneven and higher increases, which have affected their profitability.

From the tanners, they point out that the price of raw or salted leather has risen 3 times since December 2020. It went from costing 5 pesos per kilo to 20 pesos.

For their part, manufacturers of polyurethane soles, which are supplied with imported supplies, recorded an increase of 25% in the kilo of material, which went from 3.15 to 3.90 dollars per kilo.

The producers of metal buckles and accessories stated that with the pandemic international metal prices soared, reaching a 35% increase in some cases.

Added to this is the permanent increase in maritime charter for imported supplies, where the cost of moving a container from Asia to Mexico has exceeded US $ 8,000, which represents an 8% increase over the previous month.

Although in the manufacturing sector they recognize the increases, they also insist on the impossibility of passing these costs on the final product, taking into account the current reality of the consumer market, which is going through a severe depression, as a consequence of the pandemic and the loss of purchasing power for a large part of the population.
