Mexican shoemakers thank the government to maintain import taxes

Industry leaders expressed their approval for the announcement made by President López Obrador.

The executive president of the Chamber of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato -CICEG-, Alejandro Gómez Tamez, declared in his social networks, the importance of this government decision to maintain the current tariffs for the importation of footwear, textiles and clothing , for the next 6 years.

In previous days, footwear industrialists had alerted the federal government authorities about the negative consequences of reducing import tariffs.

Currently, the entry of footwear originating in countries with which Mexico does not have commercial agreements, is 30%, while the previous motion was intended to reduce them to 20 and 25%.

The industrial commitment

For the leaders, if this decrease could been applied, the local industry would have suffered greater competition from foreign products, which would have caused immediate damage to the activity and labor sources.

For Alejandro Gómez Tamez, “the taken measure by the government gives greater certainty to the sector and encourages investments throughout the chain of the footwear industry. It forces us to assume the commitment to create more better paid employment sources and continue with our transformation process ”.
