Production: 87 million pairs less. Consumption: 109 million pairs fewer

These are the figures for the Mexican footwear industry for 2020 compared to 2019.


Unforeseen health emergency of the Covid-19 has significantly affected the production and consumption of footwear in Mexico.

From CICEG, the Chamber of Industry footwear Guanajuato, its president Alfredo Padilla Villalpando made a summary in his weekly editorial in early February 2021, on the stage of the industry during the past year regarding production, consumption, employment and foreign trade.

In that sense, he explained that the manufacture of footwear throughout the country suffered a 35% contraction in 2020 compared to 2019. This meant that by the pandemic, there were only 163 million pairs manufactured 250 million in 2019.

The operational capacity of footwear and leather goods companies that remain active, ranges between 35% and 55%, while that calculated 10% to 15% completely ceased their activities. In addition, the transfer to the informality was the choice for so many businesses.

Consumption and job losses

Footwear consumption nationwide had a volume was around 220 million pairs, that is 109 million pairs fewer than in 2019.

Regarding employment, layoffs reached 24 thousand workers of the 120 thousand that exist throughout the country, which accounts for about 20% of the total, part of the 2019 Economic Census INEGI.

Exports and imports also in decline

During 2020, sales of footwear abroad totaled 18 million pairs, which resulted in a 18% contraction compared to the previous year. The negative variation could be that markets and borders were closed, highlighting the United States.

Regarding imports, 72 million pairs entered the country, which, compared to 2019, was 28% less in volume. Across the country, consumption is covered by 33% for imported goods, according to published CICEG.
