Tanners supply automotive industry amid low footwear demand
Last year, production in the leather industry contracted by 17% annually, according to Vicente Lahud Martínez, president of the Chamber of the Tannery Industry of Guanajuato (CICUR).
The decline in leather demand is attributed to reduced manufacturing activity in the footwear sector at the beginning of 2024, amid increased imports of these products and diversification in materials used to make them. In this context, the leader does not foresee a future recovery.
The lack of orders from the footwear industry is being offset by demand from the automotive sector, which in Guanajuato accounts for 50% of the leather produced, the businessmen reported.
