Worries over the growth of imports
The Mexican footwear industry produced 203 million pairs throughout 2022, as stated by the president of CICEG, Mauricio Battaglia Velázquez. At the same time, domestic consumption reached 296 million pairs of shoes.
Regarding foreign trade, the balance leans towards imports, which raises concerns among industry stakeholders. Last year, exports increased by 12% compared to 2021, reaching 34 million pairs, while imports rose by 23%, with 126 million pairs entering the country.
The leader mentioned that out of the total imports, 47 million pairs are allegedly undervalued, impacting the national government's revenue and the industry, as reported by CICEG.
