Various reasons caused a 50% decrease in the manufacture of leather footwear (15 million pairs annual average), in the period from 2019 to 2022.
With the pandemic, producers ceased their activities and later had difficulties coping with the economic crisis, according to what Ismael Zanabria -president of the Peruvian Leather Chamber- declared to the newspaper Gestión.
Another cause that impacted the industry was the importation of footwear. The leader affirmed that these products reach 80% of the demand in the Peruvian market, according to RPP.
Faced with this situation, manufacturers focused on sneakers, and significantly reduced the production of leather footwear. The sports product is in greater demand, especially at the end of the year holidays.
