In the south of the country, Arequipa, one of the areas with the largest footwear manufacturing in Peru, there are micro-entrepreneurs who claim to have reduced their productions by more than 25% due to the economic crisis generated by the coronavirus. Of the 6,000 manufacturers, between formal and informal, only 1,500 remain, reported the association's secretary of economy, Harold Gómez.
“In one week, each manufacturer made 12-15 dozen pairs, but now only 3 dozen are made. Chile and Bolivia were the main export countries, an activity that was slowed down by the health emergency”, he pointed out.
“Due to the situation, many producers changed their category, and now they make nutex masks in their workshops. Many workshops closed their doors definitively due to the impossibility of maintaining themselves”.
