Gerescal is a non-profit organization formed by nine Spanish firms in the sector (GRUPO PIKOLINOS, MASCARÓ, MUSTANG, PONS QUINTANA, ZAHONERO, GIOSEPPO, WONDERS, UNISA, and PABLOSKY). The group aims to recycle 80 thousand tons of footwear, preventing them from becoming waste in landfills after reaching the end of their useful life.
The figure is the result of an analysis of consumption in the country. With an average of 600 grams per pair and three pairs per capita annually, the result is about 80 thousand tons, as stated by the manager of the organization, Rafa Reolid, which could be recycled for the manufacturing of new products.
Gerescal works hand in hand with the Footwear Technology Center of La Rioja, in an effort to comply with the reduction of waste derived from European regulations, as reported by Cadena SER.
