Setback of the footwear industry in 2020


The pandemic hit the sector hard, causing a 28% drop in its production.

​The Federation of Spanish Footwear Industries (FICE) reported that this sector had a 28.2% drop in the Industrial Production Index for 2020, according to figures provided by the National Institute of Statistics.

In relation to foreign trade, exports registered indicators similar to those of 2013. Thus, the negative variation was 15.7%, for a total value of € 2,255.5 million. Within the European Union of 27 countries, which has a 67% share of total exports, the main markets were France, Italy, Germany, Portugal and Poland.

Outside the EU zone, the United States leads the ranking (-33%), followed by the United Kingdom (-16.4%) and China (+2%).

Imports, on the other hand, had a decrease of 19.6% in value and 23.6% in quantity, reaching € 2,698.8 million for 245 million pairs.
