Crisis in the tanning industry

Due to the sharp drop in prices in the international market and the high production costs, 80% of tannery workers have unemployment insurance (percentage reduction in wages), despite the fact that the value of the raw material is at its all-time low.
Leaders of the tanning industry asserted that in the international market there was a sharp drop in leather prices, which went from cost US $ 2 per kilo in 2014 to US $ 0.10 today.
They affirmed that the activity has become primary because the exported leathers have no added value and are sold barely salted. This makes them to be industrialized in the destination countries.
On the other hand, they pointed out that there is a structural market problem in the world, due to the fact that leather is less and less in demand due to competition from alternative products, which pushes prices down.
