High-grip soles inspired by lizards
Following studies and research conducted on the unique grip and anchoring abilities of Geckos on the undersides of their feet across various surfaces, HUNTSMAN, leader in materials for industrial use, has recently introduced its revolutionary product GECKO®, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) that, when processed conventionally for footwear soles, replicates the exclusive maximum grip properties characteristic of these reptiles.
The new range of materials, part of the AVALON® line, is high-performance and offers innovative possibilities for application in footwear soles.
They provide exceptional grip and durability, being slip-resistant comparable to rubber in both wet and dry conditions. The abrasion resistance exceeds that of rubber, which contributes to its prolonged lifespan. Recommended for soles used in walking, running, and safety footwear. It is possible to produce thin soles and very soft, low-density foamed products, offering a unique touch and feel.
For manufacturers, it results in high productivity and can be joined without adhesives to a midsole processed with HUNTSMAN’s Smartlite® 0. For designers, it is suitable for vibrant colors, available in a transparent version, and can be molded, extruded, and foamed, in addition to creating different textures and finishes.
The new technology considers the circularity of footwear and aligns with sustainability, automation, personalization, and intelligent manufacturing in a sector recognized for its rapid innovation.
Initially, there are three products available in the TPU AVALON® GECKO portfolio:
• AVALON® 6044 AG: Opaque injectable, ideal for safety footwear. Developed to offer quick cycle times to enhance productivity.
• AVALON® 6053 AG: with transparent extrusion quality optimized for applications. Allows for the creation of soles that are up to 50% thinner and lighter than conventional soles, without compromising quality, performance, or durability.
• AVALON® 6055 AG: Transparent injectable for exceptional wet slip performance.
All TPU AVALON® GECKO materials offer adhesive-free bonding when combined with other TPU midsole materials and, due to their compatibility, can be mechanically recycled with minimal impact on material performance.
