The new thermal insole technology, named O-Therm by Ortholite®, sets a new standard in protecting footwear for cold climates. For consumers, this means they can keep their feet warmer for longer and experience greater comfort.
It is made with open-cell polyurethane foam and an exclusive aerogel. This new technology creates a thermal barrier that blocks the cold and maintains the temperature regulation of the footwear.
The "secret" of the formulation is the patented aerogel, which traps micro pockets of air without the need for space, and it doesn't lose effectiveness when compressed under the foot. Ortholite's® aerogel differs from any other similar solution because it is nanoporous within a multiporous structure, creating a superior thermal barrier that blocks both cold and heat.
The action of advanced silica aerogel powder (O-Therm) is added, which is the lightest material ever manufactured by humans, weighing only three times the weight of air.
Another quality of O-Therm® aerogel is that it is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water and keeps moisture away from the foot, keeping the inside of the footwear drier and more comfortable. This aerogel does not require special handling or encapsulation.
Tests conducted by the external laboratory Vartest, based in New York, quantified the thermal performance of O-Therm® by subjecting the insoles to -78°C. The results showed that they are 54% more effective than similar products.
The material is available in molded insoles or sheets for die-cutting. Ortholite O-Therm® can be combined with a wide range of foams to create custom insole solutions tailored to various footwear categories, including formal and casual, fashion, sports, safety, work, and skiing, as well as Strobel construction insoles. The thermal performance varies depending on the chosen thickness of O-Therm®. All Ortholite® formulations use environmentally friendly recycled rubber and/or production waste to achieve Zero Waste objectives.
