Beyond the result that the Argentine government has achieved regarding the general control of the pandemic in the country, there are unforeseen situations related to commercial activity in provinces, which depend on the city and province of Buenos Aires, where most of footwear production is concentrated.
It is precisely in this geographical area, where the most contagions have occurred and where the isolation measures are maintained with greater rigor, as opposed to the health status of many provinces in the interior of the country, where the incidences of the coronavirus have been lower and reigns greater flexibility in general activities.
From the statemen, it can be deduced that, as a large part of the shoe factories in Buenos Aires, with insufficient transport logistics, are paralyzed, they cannot satisfy the minimum demand of those shoe shops in the provinces that maintain certain levels of commercial activity. More in the footwear sector, than because it is a temporary product, in this period of the year, they need to have the offer of autumn-winter footwear conformed.
The lack of merchandise is the result of the first purchases of the year made by merchants from the interior of the country, in January and February, to factories in Buenos Aires, which they could not deliver due to inactivity due to compulsory isolation. Another reverse situation must also be recognized: the cancellation of orders by merchants in the face of the coronavirus fear.
The truth is, that from different provinces, particularly those where the virus has not had a major incidence, many shoe stores have expressed concern about the insufficient availability of footwear, although they acknowledge a pronounced drop in sales.
According to Hermes Rodríguez, president of the Chamber of Commerce of the province of San Juan, in statements to the Diario de Cuyo said “it is evident the lack of stock of autumn-winter merchandise in the shoe stores. The factories closed and transportation became very difficult", he said.
"We not only stopped receiving national footwear, but also from Brazil, due to the closure of imports", added another merchant.
