Local production of NIKE and ADIDAS suffers due to lack of imported supplies

DASS in Misiones suspended 96 workers and complains about the restrictions on the purchase of dollars.

President Alberto Fernández during his visit last year to the DASS plant in Misiones.

The industrial group of Brazilian origin, with a plant in Eldorado in the province of Misiones, which manufactures brands such as NIKE, ADIDAS, UMBRO, ASICS and FILA, had to suspend 96 workers due to the lack of supplies and components for the production of footwear.

From the company, they argue that the difficulties in accessing foreign currency to pay for imports, causes a shortage of supplies and therefore they are forced to restructure the scheduling of productions. In this regard, they have informed the national authorities about the problem, and even the provincial government is collaborating to unblock the situation, which will allow to avoid definitive layoffs and normalize production.

Currently, the factory produces 14,000 pairs a day, with 330 jobs, supporting 567 families.

After the mandatory conciliation, issued by the Ministry of Labor, for the dismissal of the 96 workers, the company reported that those affected will have a suspension of paid work until the problem is resolved.

DASS statement

“Our industrial vocation and our courage to take risks and maintain the continuity of activities in the factory, led us to bet again on the country and in March 2021, after developing a plan together with the national and provincial government, we announced a investment of US$ 25 million, the incorporation of 250 new jobs, and the expansion of production lines”.

“As the largest footwear factory in the country, we trust that this is a reversible measure and that in the short term we will have clear rules that will help us unblock the productive situation of our group in order to avoid further restructuring in our production plant in Eldorado, Misiones, or in Coronel Suárez”, the company's communication concluded.

The voice of UTICRA

From the Union of Workers of the Footwear Industry, its delegate Darío Vera explained that in the face of the dismissals “we had taken a force measure within the plant which was lifted automatically after we were informed about the conciliation. The company also made the decision to release the colleagues so that they could go home, and we had a meeting with the delegates”.

In the union they trust that in the next hours and days, through meetings that will be held with the company and the Ministry of Labor, the difficulties to reach an agreement will be smoothed out.
