The news was given by the specialized newspaper El Peletero of Bogotá and caused consternation in the San Benito neighborhood, in Tunjuelito, south of the capital. The area is recognized for the existence of more than 300 establishments dedicated to leather tannery, which employ nearly 5,000 workers.
To the deaths of the 13 tanners, between owners and operators, was added a similar number of those infected who are treated in hospitals and assistance centers.
The outbreaks of infection were two events that caused crowds: a cockfight and a birthday.
Among the participants there were those who pointed out that "there were rumors that there were several infected in the place" and described the organizers of the meetings as irresponsible, who without warning and without taking the necessary sanitary measures, compromised the lives of all the attendees.
After the events, the mayor of Tunjuelito, Claudia López, decreed a quarantine focused on the entire town, to counter the spread of the virus.
A relative of one of the deceased commented to El Peletero: “Everything had been handled with prudence and we did not think that things would get out of control. We believed that the infected would overcome the disease, but the situation worsened. Today we have to regret deaths and pray that the hospitalized recover and save their lives”.
