FENALCO, the Federation of Merchants of Colombia, requested the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism to postpone Mother's Day and Children's Day for August or September in the first case, and for October the children's celebration.
In its recitals, the petition states that "it is important that Colombians can celebrate as a family after compulsory confinement and that commerce in turn has had the opportunity to reactivate and resupply from its production chain."
According to data from the federation, 97% of citizens celebrate this date and on average spend between 100 and 200 thousand pesos in gifts, which are mostly clothing, FOOTWEAR and accessories.
As a precedent for sales, the year before, this celebration registered a strong movement throughout the month and showed a rebound, giving the economy a breather in 2019.
“As is generally known, Mother's Day is the second most important celebration for Colombians and therefore for commerce, not only because of the importance of honoring mothers, but because of the evolution of consumption patterns of this important date”, added the FENALCO statement.
