Global footwear industry recovery in 2022

The annual report from APICCAPS reveals the potential of Asia and the resumption of its growth after the pandemic.

Following the health crisis, Asia's production structure is being reconstituted and is once again consolidating its position as a leading supplier in the international market.

In 2022, the global footwear sector showed signs of recovery. This was determined by APICCAPS -the Portuguese Footwear, Components, and Leather Goods Manufacturers' Association- in the recent publication of the World Footwear Yearbook 2023, highlighting the significance of Asia in general, and China in particular, across various market variables.

In this regard, the 23.9 billion pairs of footwear produced worldwide last year were 7.6% higher than in 2021 and close to the performance recorded before the pandemic. Asia accounted for 87.4% of the total global manufacturing, with China representing 54.6%, establishing itself as the primary footwear producer.

The continent also demonstrated its consumption capacity, reaching 53.2% on a global scale. Additionally, China held a 17.9% share, leading the ranking of footwear consumed in 2022.

Exports also rebounded compared to the figures prior to the health crisis, experiencing a 9% increase from 2021. Of the 15.2 billion pairs sold internationally, Asia accounted for 83.9% of the total. Meanwhile, China's exported footwear comprised over 60% of the globally traded volume.
