National footwear manufacturing showed a 6% increase in the first four months of 2021, compared to the 34% drop registered in 2020.
In this context, the footwear industry awaits the full restart of the face-to-face school period, based on its contribution to the growth of the general demand for footwear. According to industrial sources, the return to classrooms could generate a 25% increase in sales and production.
To exemplify, Alejandro Gómez Tamez, executive president of CICEG, the Guanajuato Chamber of Footwear, reported that approximately 30% of the footwear sold in Mexico is for children, and of that percentage, half is intended for school use. "We are talking about 15% of total sales in Mexico, which is a considerable amount, and most of it is manufactured in Guanajuato", said the leader.
