MEXICO FOOTWEAR. For now it must wait.

Given the epidemiological situation, the federal government has not yet resolved to enable the shoe industry.

Most of the footwear productive chain is paralyzed, due to the increase in infections in the state of Guanajuato.

Despite the prevailing expectations about an imminent restart of activities in the footwear industry of León, Guanajuato, for the next week, the federal authorities decided to prolong their quarantine, except for those factories that have reconverted their productions for sanitary ware.

Within a detailed plan to reopen social, educational and economic activities, the Secretary of the Economy, Graciela Márquez, explained the scope and implementation of the measures, which include three stages: one that begins on May 18, another of preparation from May 18 to 31 and the third that starts on June 1, when the National Day of Healthy Distance ends.

In the framework of this resolution, the footwear sector of Guanajuato, was awaiting the evolution of the health crisis and the new decisions of the central power, to make its reopening concrete.

Risks increase

According to representatives of the Footwear Chamber of Guanajuato, the recent provision of the federal government endangers 70% of the shoe companies of León.

Luis Gerardo González García, president of CICEG confirmed that despite the efforts for the elaboration of safety protocols, which the entity elaborated, the footwear sector must wait for an official measure, since until now it has not been declared as essential to authorize its operation.

According to industrial leaders, this situation significantly worsens the state of many companies in the SME sector, as they do not have the necessary resources to withstand a prolonged period of inactivity, with all the consequences that this implies.
