MEXICO FOOTWEAR. Overfly the Chinese danger.

Guanajuato shoemakers alert the government and merchants to an oversupply of Asian products.

Alejandro Gómez Tamez. Executive President of CICEG, Chamber of the Footwear Industry of the State of Guanajuato.

Although the income of Chinese footwear in the first quarter of the year fell by 50%, "this does not set a trend and its cause must be analyzed correctly," CICEG chief executive Alejandro Gómez Tamez said in statements to local press media.

The executive clarified that the drop in imports was due to the coronavirus health crisis and the temporary closure of factories in China, which had to discontinue shipments to Mexico.

More Chinese than national offer

For the shoemakers representative, danger lurks as the Chinese have already normalized their productions, and the Mexican industry is going through the critical period of the pandemic, practically without producing.

This situation, in the next few days, would change the scenario, where there will be a greater offer of Asian products and lower quantity of national footwear.

Government control will be essential

Given this circumstance, he considered that "it is necessary for there to be greater control of imports by the government, when the quarantine ends and the trade resumes its activities."

In this regard, he noted that "it is very possible that Mexican merchants seeing the national factories closed will buy Chinese products again."

"The Chinese manufacturers, having not sold footwear for the last three months, have an enormous amount of sales that are going to finish off in the rest of the world," he stressed.

He reiterated that "it will be essential to monitor the evolution of imports from the Orient, and in the event that they are exaggerated, commercial remedy measures must be requested from the Secretary of the Economy ”.

"To this problem must be added the undervaluation, an irregular practice in footwear imports, which has not yet been eradicated," he said.

Most factories, on hold

Regarding the current situation of the footwear industry in Mexico, he reported that “most factories await government decisions to resume their activities. As long as those that were declared essential due to the conversion of their productions to sanitary articles, they can work using protocol".
