RELIEF IN PERU. The sale of 4 million pairs would save shoemakers

It would be a State purchases program to MSMEs in El Porvenir.

School footwear would be one of the exits to the pressing situation experienced by the El Porvenir industry in Peru.

At the virtual meeting held at the end of last May, which had the presence of Rocío Barrios Alvarado -Minister of Production- and Víctor Rebaza Benites -major of El Porvenir-, together with union representatives, it was considered the possibility of a major purchase from the national government. These are 4 million pairs of school footwear for children across the country. They will be manufactured by MSMEs of the El Porvenir region and would be a relief for the weak economy of shoemakers.

With this initiative, more than 90 thousand people that make up a wide network of workshops and factories would reduce the impact of the reigning crisis, which so far has resulted in losses of around 300 million soles (approx. US$ 87 million).

A new sector entity was formed

Also in the field of the footwear industry, the National Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Tanners and Related was created. The entity will cover the sector throughout the country, in a volume greater than 3,000 micro and small industrialists, while the board of directors is based in Trujillo, more precisely in the El Porvenir district.

In its first statements, the union requested the protection of the sector and its economy, through actions by the national state. In this sense, they highlighted the importance of the REACTIVA PERU government program, destined to credits for production, with an availability of 30 billion. The president of the brand-new entity, Marco Rubio Mariños, reported that 8% of footwear industrialist were included in the initiative.

On the occasion, he reiterated the impact on Peruvian production caused by the entry of Chinese synthetic footwear, and in this sense requested to review the Free Trade Agreement with that country, by the national state.

According to Rubio Mariños, the annual production of the footwear sector in Peru is more than one billion soles, about 300 million dollars.
