STOP IMPORTS! The request of Mexican shoemakers

To allow the recovery of the national footwear industry, and to revive the economy.

Historically, irregular practices in the entry of merchandise have affected many industries in Mexico.

Before the meeting that President López Obrador will hold with the Secretaries of Health and Economy to define the resumption of activities in different sectors, the Guanajuato Footwear Chamber -CICEG- asked the federal government to temporarily suspend the entry of imported footwear, specially those that have a lower price than the cost of raw materials.

The president of CICEG, Luis Gerardo González García, clarified that the entity is not against imports, but that it be done appropriately and equitably, promoting awareness of consuming Mexican products.

In statements to local media, the official added, "what we are against is contraband and we are closed against all those companies that cheat and pass undervalued products in order not to pay taxes. We ask that they enter with their real market price, because it is not explainable why they enter with prices that are below what raw materials cost. For this reason, we request that the Ministry of Finance and customs, when they let these products pass, be much more demanding", said Luis Gerardo González García.

Consequences, exports and security

Among other comments, the leaders of the sectoral entity pointed out that the technical stoppage of activities in the factories for more than 30 days, due to the pandemic, is affecting 240,000 sources of work in the state of Guanajuato. It is added to this, that several exporting companies cannot meet the agreed delivery times, their competitiveness is at risk and the loss of jobs would be generated.

Finally, they pointed out that the Guanajuato Chamber, a few days ago, released a protocol prepared in compliance with the rules of the health authorities, to provide the necessary security that CICEG workers require, to prevent the spread of Covid-19.
