BRAZIL FOOTWEAR. Decrease the rate of layoffs

Even with negative indicators, there were fewer declines in the working market.

According to the survey carried out by the Brazilian Association of Footwear Industries (ABICALÇADOS), it was reported that the inactive productive units throughout the country reached 24% of the total consulted. Meanwhile, current production in the sector has a capacity of around 36%, according to Haroldo Ferreira, executive president of the entity.

For its part, the data provided by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), indicated that the production of footwear registered a 27.6% decrease between January and April 2020, in relation to the same four-month period last year.

Regarding employment, ABICALÇADOS reported that 35.9 thousand layoffs were recorded between the end of March and June 10. In this sense, Rio Grande do Sul has 10.7 thousand fewer workers, in addition to the -10.6 thousand in São Paulo, -5.4 thousand in Minas Gerais, -4.8 thousand in Bahia and -1.6 thousand in Ceará.

The highlight was the slowdown in the loss of jobs, with 800 layoffs in the last week and in relation to previous measurements with approximately 3,000 average layoffs. The cause of this result would be that physical commerce is restarting its activities, gradually.

Exports also fell

From the entity they reported that 39.5 million pairs were exported between January and May 2020, which meant 22.1% less than the same months of 2019. The value of foreign sales reached US $ 249.9 million, a retraction 28.7%.

The three largest markets had negative variations. Thus, purchases from the United States decreased 32.3% in quantity, by 3.8 million pairs; while the value was 32.1% lower, totaling US $ 57.7 million.

For its part, Argentina decreased imports of Brazilian footwear by 3.8% (2.8 million pairs) and the value decreased by 21.7% (US $ 29.4 million). Finally, France registered falls of 17.8% (2.6 million pairs) and 10.7% (US $ 19.5 million).
